Pavement Surgeon

I’m a sucker for vigilante art, especially when executed in a meaningful way. So, when I stumbled upon this post on a design subreddit about a "Pavement Surgeon", I was quick to praise it.

Then I read the comments. Surprisingly, most were negative with concerns about this potentially being a slip hazard when wet and its durability over time…which led to the age-old debate over the difference between art and design (i.e. Art is meant to provoke thought and emotions. Design is meant to function).

Is there a place for art where design failed the first time (I know one could argue asphalt is hardly design). Or, maybe the question is: can art shine a spotlight on something that needs an improved design?
